Probably GM LS motors.

The small block Chevy, all the way.

Came here to say this. I would imagine Honda K-series motors are a close second.

Not cheap though for what they actually provide. I am looking at doing a high flow cat, headers and full exhaust, over $1000 easy.

yeah... As a group, but wouldn't any single block only have a fraction of the parts?

Gen I small block chevy. IMO, it's no contest at all.

The old school SBC has a lot more and a lot cheaper parts available than the LS.

Yup. You can build a 400hp engine for less than $1000, and that's not counting re-selling used parts. Carb to pan, with headers.

Not to mention all of the choices you have. Want to run triple carbs? There's parts for that. Cross ram dual four barrels? No problem. Want to run EFI? You can do that. Tunnel ram? Yep. Big ass Roots blower up through the hood? All day long.

Midwest? Pick up an old drag fox body. The 302 or 351 engine out of one can be built super cheap

SBC, GM LS, I call them the same thing. I know I shouldn't but I do.

In America it's hard to beat a Chevy 350.
In the UK it's a different matter. Perhaps the Rover V8, or maybe the JP4 from a 106 GTI or something similarly hot-hatchy.
